What we install
When cameras go offline, stop recording or show a blurry night picture, we find the cause before recommending new equipment. CCTV troubleshooting covers power, cabling, recorder settings, hard drive health and network access. Where a repair is practical, such as a failed connector, a damaged cable or a configuration fault, we fix it. Where it is not, we quote a camera or NVR replacement and reuse suitable cabling and cameras. Upgrades are often worthwhile for older systems: H.265 (HEVC) video compression needs roughly half the bitrate of H.264 for similar picture quality, so a newer recorder can keep footage for longer on the same storage. We also work on systems installed by someone else, provided administrator access is available.
- Cameras offline, not recording or missing from playback
- Hard drive, power supply and NVR replacement
- Security camera replacement with suitable cabling reused
- Firmware updates planned around compatibility and downtime
- Upgrades from older analogue-style cameras to IP cameras
Find out why recording or a camera has changed
A camera can show a live picture while recording has stopped, so a useful CCTV check includes playback and storage as well as the live view. Tell us when the problem began, which cameras are affected and whether anything changed beforehand, such as a power outage, a storm or a new router. Photos of error messages and the exact camera and recorder models help us scope the investigation.
Authorised administrator access may be needed to check settings or apply an agreed firmware update, which is planned around compatibility and acceptable downtime rather than applied because a newer version exists. At the end, we explain what was checked, what changed and any remaining work.
| Option | When it helps | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Live image but no playback | Recording schedule or storage investigation | Recorder model, error messages and when footage stopped |
| One camera offline | Check its power and connection path | Camera position and whether other cameras still work |
| Blurry or dark night image | Camera settings, lighting or an ageing camera | Night-time examples and the camera model |

How quoting works
Written, itemised and no-obligation quotes. Any callout fee is confirmed before a visit is booked. Send photos or plans with the work required; straightforward jobs can be quoted without a visit.
- Send models, symptoms and recent changes.
- Agree diagnostic access and the work included.
- Review checks, changes and separately quoted repairs.
Questions about this service
Can you investigate cameras that have stopped recording?
Yes. Send the camera and recorder models, any error messages and when the problem started. We check playback, hard drive health, recording schedules and storage settings as well as power and network connections. Many recording faults come down to a failed drive or a changed setting, and replacement parts are quoted before any are fitted.
Do you support equipment installed by someone else?
Yes. We need the administrator login for the recorder or app, or the owner's approval to reset it, plus the model details. If nobody knows the password the original installer set, a reset may be needed, which can clear settings and sometimes recordings. We explain that risk before doing it.
Is it worth repairing an old CCTV system or replacing it?
We assess the fault and the age of the system before recommending repair or replacement. A faulty cable, connector, power supply or hard drive is usually worth repairing. If the recorder no longer receives firmware updates or the cameras give poor night images, replacement is often better value over time. Where the cabling is sound, we reuse it and replace only the cameras and recorder.
Can you fix one camera that keeps going offline?
Yes. A single camera dropping out points to its own power, cable, connector or network port rather than the whole system. We test the cable run and the switch or recorder port, and look for water in outdoor connections. Tell us whether the drop-outs happen at a certain time, such as at night when infrared switches on, because that often points to a power problem.
